Ingredients
- Yellow split peas (toor dal) - 100 grams
- Fresh fenugreek leaves (methi) - 50 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Oil (preferably mustard oil or ghee) - 1 tablespoon
- Water - 3 cups
- Cilantro - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the yellow split peas (toor dal) under running water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for 30 minutes, then drain.
- In a pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, and let them splutter.
- Add the finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Stir in the grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chili. Sauté for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato and turmeric powder, cooking until the tomato softens and mixes well with the spices.
- Add the soaked toor dal and mix well. Pour in 3 cups of water and season with salt. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the dal is cooked and soft.
- While the dal is cooking, wash the fresh fenugreek leaves thoroughly and chop them coarsely.
- Once the dal is cooked, stir in the chopped fenugreek leaves and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
