Ingredients

  • Black lentils (urad dal) - 100 grams
  • Red kidney beans (rajma) - 50 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
  • Garlic - 1 tablespoon, minced
  • Tomato - 1 medium, pureed
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • Coconut cream - 2 tablespoons
  • Whole wheat burger buns - 2
  • Lettuce leaves - 2
  • Tomato slices - 4
  • Cucumber slices - 4
  • Avocado - 1, sliced
  • Fresh cilantro - for garnish

Steps

  1. Soak the black lentils and red kidney beans overnight in plenty of water.
  2. Drain and rinse the lentils and beans, then cook them in a pressure cooker with 2 cups of water for about 15-20 minutes until soft.
  3. In a separate pan, heat a teaspoon of oil over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion until translucent.
  4. Add the grated ginger and minced garlic, cooking for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the pureed tomato, cumin powder, garam masala, salt, and black pepper, cooking for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  6. Add the cooked lentils and beans to the tomato mixture, along with the coconut cream, and simmer for 10 minutes on low heat to meld the flavors.
  7. While the daal makhani is simmering, toast the burger buns lightly.
  8. Assemble the burgers by placing a generous scoop of daal makhani on the bottom half of each bun, followed by lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and avocado slices.
  9. Top with fresh cilantro and cover with the other half of the bun.
  10. Serve immediately with your choice of sauce or chutney.
