- Black lentils (urad dal) - 100 grams
- Red kidney beans (rajma) - 50 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, grated
- Garlic - 1 tablespoon, minced
- Tomato - 1 medium, pureed
- Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Black pepper - to taste
- Coconut cream - 2 tablespoons
- Whole wheat burger buns - 2
- Lettuce leaves - 2
- Tomato slices - 4
- Cucumber slices - 4
- Avocado - 1, sliced
- Fresh cilantro - for garnish
Steps
- Soak the black lentils and red kidney beans overnight in plenty of water.
- Drain and rinse the lentils and beans, then cook them in a pressure cooker with 2 cups of water for about 15-20 minutes until soft.
- In a separate pan, heat a teaspoon of oil over medium heat and sauté the chopped onion until translucent.
- Add the grated ginger and minced garlic, cooking for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
- Stir in the pureed tomato, cumin powder, garam masala, salt, and black pepper, cooking for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens.
- Add the cooked lentils and beans to the tomato mixture, along with the coconut cream, and simmer for 10 minutes on low heat to meld the flavors.
- While the daal makhani is simmering, toast the burger buns lightly.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a generous scoop of daal makhani on the bottom half of each bun, followed by lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and avocado slices.
- Top with fresh cilantro and cover with the other half of the bun.
- Serve immediately with your choice of sauce or chutney.
