Ingredients
- Black lentils (urad dal) - 100 grams
- Kidney beans (rajma) - 50 grams
- Water - 1.5 liters
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomatoes - 2 medium, pureed
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Garlic - 4 cloves, minced
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander leaves - for garnish
- Cooking oil - 2 tablespoons
- Non-dairy cream (coconut or cashew) - 2 tablespoons
Steps
- Soak the black lentils and kidney beans in water for at least 6-8 hours or overnight.
- Drain and rinse the lentils and beans, then add them to a pressure cooker with 1.5 liters of fresh water and a little salt. Cook for about 20-25 minutes until soft.
- In a large pan, heat the cooking oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in the ginger, garlic, and green chili, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the pureed tomatoes, turmeric, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the mixture, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the cooked lentils and kidney beans to the tomato mixture. Stir well and simmer for 30 minutes, adding water as needed to achieve desired consistency.
- Stir in the garam masala and non-dairy cream. Cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.
