- Basmati rice - 100 grams
- Split yellow moong dal - 50 grams
- Water - 600 ml
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander leaves - for garnish, chopped
- Oil - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice and moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them together in water for 15 minutes and then drain.
- In a pressure cooker, heat the oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and sauté until they start to splutter.
- Add the chopped onion, ginger, and garlic to the cooker. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
- Stir in the chopped tomato and green chili, cooking until the tomato softens.
- Add the rinsed rice and dal mixture to the cooker, along with turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
- Pour in 600 ml of water, stir, and close the lid of the pressure cooker.
- Cook on high heat until the first whistle, then reduce to low heat and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid carefully.
- Fluff the khichdi with a fork, garnish with chopped coriander leaves, and serve hot.
