  • Water - 600 ml
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Salt - to taste
  • Coriander leaves - for garnish, chopped

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them together in water for 15 minutes and then drain.
  2. In a pressure cooker, heat the oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and sauté until they start to splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onion, ginger, and garlic to the cooker. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  4. Stir in the chopped tomato and green chili, cooking until the tomato softens.
  5. Add the rinsed rice and dal mixture to the cooker, along with turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
  6. Pour in 600 ml of water, stir, and close the lid of the pressure cooker.
  7. Cook on high heat until the first whistle, then reduce to low heat and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
