Ingredients

  • Moong dal - 100 grams
  • Rice - 100 grams
  • Water - 4 cups
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Green chilies - 1, finely chopped
  • Salt - to taste
  • Coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Whole wheat flour (for puris) - 1 cup
  • Salt (for puris) - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Water (for puris) - as needed
  • Oil - for frying puris

Steps

  1. Rinse the moong dal and rice together under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the rinsed moong dal, rice, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, grated ginger, chopped green chilies, and salt. Pour in 4 cups of water.
  3. Cook on medium heat for about 3 whistles, then turn off the heat and let the pressure release naturally.
  4. Meanwhile, prepare the puris: In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt. Gradually add water to form a smooth and firm dough. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  5. After the dough has rested, divide it into small balls and roll each ball into a small circle using a rolling pin.
  6. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully slide in the rolled puris one at a time.
  7. Fry the puris until they puff up and turn golden brown on both sides. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  8. Once the khichdi is cooked, stir it well and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  9. Serve the hot daal khichdi with crispy puris on the side.
