Ingredients
- Moong dal (split yellow lentils) - 100 grams
- Basmati rice - 100 grams
- Water - 3 cups (0.75 liters)
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ginger, grated - 1 teaspoon
- Green chilies, finely chopped - 1-2 (adjust to taste)
- Salt - to taste
- Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
- Coriander leaves, chopped - 2 tablespoons
- Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- Rinse the moong dal and basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak them together in water for 15 minutes.
- In a pot, add the soaked dal and rice along with 3 cups of water and turmeric powder. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the dal and rice are cooked and soft.
- Once cooked, mash the mixture lightly with a fork to combine. Stir in the grated ginger, chopped green chilies, and salt. Let it cool slightly.
- In a frying pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Once hot, add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Take a portion of the dal-rice mixture and shape it into small patties or cakes. Place them in the frying pan and fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 4-5 minutes per side.
- Repeat the process with the remaining mixture. Once done, remove from the pan and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and drizzle with lemon juice before serving.
