- Basmati rice - 1/2 cup
- Split yellow moong dal - 1/2 cup
- Water - 4 cups
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander leaves - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice and moong dal under running water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for 20 minutes, then drain.
- In a large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add chopped onions, ginger, garlic, and green chili. Sauté until the onions become translucent.
- Stir in the turmeric powder and sauté for another minute to release its aroma.
- Add the soaked rice and dal to the pot, mixing well with the onion-spice mixture.
- Pour in 4 cups of water and add salt to taste. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice and dal are cooked and the consistency is creamy.
- Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
