- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cilantro leaves - a handful, chopped
- Oil - 1 tablespoon (preferably vegetable or coconut oil)
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 4 cups
Steps
- Rinse the yellow split peas (toor dal) under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a pot, combine the rinsed dal and 4 cups of water. Add turmeric powder and a pinch of salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the dal is soft and cooked through.
- In a separate pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, and let them sizzle for 30 seconds.
- Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chili. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft and mushy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Once the dal is cooked, add it to the pan with the onion-tomato mixture. Mix well and adjust the salt as needed.
- Add garam masala and stir to combine. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes on low heat.
- Garnish with chopped cilantro leaves before serving.
