Ingredients

  • Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 100 grams
  • Whole wheat flour - 100 grams
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida (hing) - a pinch
  • Green chili - 1, finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Water - 4 cups

Steps

  1. Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for about 15-20 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, turmeric powder, and 3 cups of water. Cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the dal is cooked and soft.
  3. While the dal is cooking, prepare the dhokli dough by mixing whole wheat flour, salt, and enough water to form a soft dough. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  4. Roll out the dough into a thin sheet and cut it into diamond or square shapes to make dhoklis.
  5. Once the dal is cooked, mash it slightly with a ladle and add more water to get a soup-like consistency. Bring it to a simmer.
  6. In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and asafoetida. Once they splutter, add chopped green chili, garlic, and ginger. Sauté for a minute.
  7. Pour the tempered mixture into the cooked dal and mix well. Adjust salt to taste.
  8. Drop the dhoklis into the simmering dal and cook for about 5-7 minutes until they are cooked through.
  9. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
