Ingredients
- Black lentils (urad dal) - 100 grams
- Water - 1 liter
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, pureed
- Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Oil (for frying) - 2 tablespoons
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the black lentils thoroughly and soak them in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- In a pot, add the soaked lentils and 1 liter of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the lentils are soft, about 30-40 minutes. Drain any excess water.
- In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the pureed tomato, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the mixture, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the cooked lentils to the skillet and mix well. Cook for another 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Sprinkle garam masala over the lentils, mix gently, and remove from heat.
- Heat a little more oil in a separate pan and add the lentil mixture. Fry for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until it slightly crisps up.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
