Ingredients
- Basmati rice - 150 grams
- Fresh coriander leaves - 30 grams (1 cup, chopped)
- Onion - 1 medium (about 100 grams, finely chopped)
- Green chilies - 1 (slit lengthwise)
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon (grated)
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt - 1 teaspoon (to taste)
- Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
- Water - 300 milliliters
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice under running water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for about 15 minutes.
- In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin and mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and lightly golden.
- Stir in the grated ginger and slit green chili, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
- Add turmeric powder and salt, stirring well to combine.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the saucepan, gently stirring to coat the rice with the spice mixture.
- Pour in 300 milliliters of water and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and water is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork.
- Fold in the chopped coriander leaves just before serving for a fresh burst of flavor.
