Ingredients
- Canned chickpeas - 240 grams (1 cup)
- Red onion - 50 grams (1/4 cup, finely chopped)
- Cucumber - 50 grams (1/4 cup, finely chopped)
- Tomato - 50 grams (1/4 cup, finely chopped)
- Cilantro - 15 grams (1/4 cup, chopped)
- Green chili - 1 small, finely chopped
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Garlic - 1 clove, minced
- Chaat masala - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Black pepper - to taste
- Whole wheat bread crumbs - 50 grams (1/2 cup)
- Olive oil - 1 tablespoon (for cooking)
- Burger buns - 2 pieces
- Lettuce leaves - 2 pieces
- Yogurt sauce - 2 tablespoons (for serving)
Steps
- Rinse and drain the canned chickpeas. In a large bowl, mash them with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but with some texture.
- Add the chopped red onion, cucumber, tomato, cilantro, green chili, ginger, garlic, chaat masala, cumin powder, salt, and black pepper to the mashed chickpeas. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
- Stir in the whole wheat bread crumbs to help bind the mixture. If the mixture feels too wet, add more bread crumbs as needed.
- Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape each portion into a patty.
- Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Toast the burger buns lightly on the skillet if desired. Assemble the burgers by placing a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by the chickpea patty, and a dollop of yogurt sauce on top. Cover with the top half of the bun.
- Serve the Chickpea Salad Burgers hot with extra yogurt sauce on the side.
