Ingredients
- Canned chickpeas - 400 grams, drained and rinsed
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
- Green chili - 1, finely chopped (optional)
- Cilantro (fresh coriander) - 2 tablespoons, chopped
- Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon (or to taste)
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Bread crumbs - 1/2 cup
- Egg - 1 large (or flax egg for vegan option)
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons (for frying)
- Burger buns - 2, whole wheat or your choice
- Lettuce leaves - 2, for serving
- Tomato - 1, sliced, for serving
- Cucumber - 1/2, sliced, for serving
- Yogurt or vegan mayo - for serving
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, mash the drained chickpeas with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
- Add the chopped onion, garlic, ginger, green chili, cilantro, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala, salt, and black pepper to the mashed chickpeas.
- Mix in the bread crumbs and the egg (or flax egg) until well combined. If the mixture is too wet, add more bread crumbs to achieve a moldable consistency.
- Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape each portion into a patty.
- Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the patties in the pan and cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy.
- While the patties are cooking, toast the burger buns lightly if desired.
- Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on each bun, and top with lettuce, tomato slices, cucumber slices, and a dollop of yogurt or vegan mayo.
- Serve warm and enjoy your delicious high-protein chickpea burger!
