Ingredients

  • Chana dal - 1/2 cup
  • Ghee - 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar - 1/3 cup
  • Milk - 1 cup
  • Water - 1/2 cup
  • Cardamom powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chopped nuts (almonds, cashews) - 2 tablespoons
  • Raisins - 1 tablespoon
  • Saffron strands - a pinch

Steps

  1. Rinse the chana dal thoroughly under running water and soak it in water for about 2 hours.
  2. Drain the soaked chana dal and grind it into a coarse paste using a little water if necessary.
  3. In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add the coarse chana dal paste and sauté it for about 10-15 minutes until it turns golden brown and fragrant.
  4. Add the milk and water to the pan, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens and the chana dal is cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  5. Stir in the sugar, cardamom powder, and saffron strands. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring constantly until the halwa reaches a desired consistency.
  6. In the last few minutes, add the chopped nuts and raisins, mixing well to combine.
  7. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before serving. Garnish with additional nuts if desired.
