Ingredients
- Chana dal - 1/2 cup
- Ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Sugar - 1/3 cup
- Milk - 1 cup
- Water - 1/2 cup
- Cardamom powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Chopped nuts (almonds, cashews) - 2 tablespoons
- Raisins - 1 tablespoon
- Saffron strands - a pinch
Steps
- Rinse the chana dal thoroughly under running water and soak it in water for about 2 hours.
- Drain the soaked chana dal and grind it into a coarse paste using a little water if necessary.
- In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add the coarse chana dal paste and sauté it for about 10-15 minutes until it turns golden brown and fragrant.
- Add the milk and water to the pan, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens and the chana dal is cooked through, about 10 minutes.
- Stir in the sugar, cardamom powder, and saffron strands. Cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring constantly until the halwa reaches a desired consistency.
- In the last few minutes, add the chopped nuts and raisins, mixing well to combine.
- Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before serving. Garnish with additional nuts if desired.
