Ingredients
- Chana dal - 1 cup
- Water - 3 cups
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Garlic - 3 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Oil (coconut or vegetable) - 2 tablespoons
- Cilantro - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the chana dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for at least 30 minutes.
- In a pot, bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Add the soaked chana dal and turmeric powder, reduce to a simmer, and cook for about 20-25 minutes, or until the dal is tender but not mushy.
- In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds, and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili, and sauté for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften, about 5 minutes.
- Once the chana dal is cooked, drain any excess water if necessary and add it to the onion-tomato mixture. Stir well to combine.
- Add garam masala and adjust salt if needed. Cook for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
