  • Water - 1 cup (250ml)
  • Onion (finely chopped) - 1 small
  • Green chili (finely chopped) - 1 small
  • Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander leaves (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon (or to taste)
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon (for greasing)

Steps

  1. Soak the chana dal in water for at least 4 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse well.
  2. In a blender, combine the soaked chana dal and 1 cup of water. Blend until you have a smooth batter.
  3. In a mixing bowl, add the blended batter, chopped onion, green chili, ginger, coriander leaves, cumin powder, turmeric powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until combined.
  4. Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper and lightly grease it with olive oil.
  5. Pour half of the batter onto the prepared baking tray and spread it evenly to form a pancake shape.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the top is firm.
  7. Remove from the oven, flip the cheela, and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until the other side is golden brown.
  8. Once done, remove from the oven, cut into wedges, and serve hot with chutney or yogurt.
