Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 1 cup
  • Mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas) - 1 cup
  • Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 1/4 cup
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Green chilies - 1, slit
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 teaspoon
  • Bisi Bele Pulao powder - 2 tablespoons
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
  • Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 2.5 cups

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and toor dal separately under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak them together in water for 20 minutes.
  2. In a large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown. Then, add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until it softens, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Add the mixed vegetables, turmeric powder, and bisi bele pulao powder. Stir well to combine and cook for another 2 minutes.
  6. Drain the soaked rice and dal, then add them to the pot along with salt and water. Stir to mix everything well.
  7. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice and dal are cooked and the water is absorbed.
  8. Remove from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes before fluffing it with a fork. Garnish with curry leaves if desired and serve hot.
