- Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 1/4 cup
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Green chilies - 1, slit
- Ginger-garlic paste - 1 teaspoon
- Bisi Bele Pulao powder - 2 tablespoons
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
- Ghee or oil - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 2.5 cups
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice and toor dal separately under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak them together in water for 20 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown. Then, add the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
- Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until it softens, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the mixed vegetables, turmeric powder, and bisi bele pulao powder. Stir well to combine and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Drain the soaked rice and dal, then add them to the pot along with salt and water. Stir to mix everything well.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice and dal are cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes before fluffing it with a fork. Garnish with curry leaves if desired and serve hot.
