Ingredients
- Brown rice - 50 grams
- Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 50 grams
- Mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas) - 100 grams
- Onion - 1 medium, diced
- Tomato - 1 medium, diced
- Green chilies - 1, slit
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Bisi Bele Bath powder (or Sambar powder) - 2 tablespoons
- Ghee or oil - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 6 cups
- Coriander leaves - for garnish
Steps
- Rinse the brown rice and toor dal together under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
- Add the diced onion and green chilies to the pot. Sauté until the onions become translucent.
- Stir in the diced tomato and cook until soft, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the mixed vegetables, turmeric powder, Bisi Bele Bath powder, and salt. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the rinsed rice and dal to the pot, followed by 6 cups of water. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until the rice and dal are cooked and have absorbed the flavors.
- Once cooked, remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. Stir well before serving.
- Serve the Bisi Bele Bath Soup hot, garnished with chopped coriander leaves.
