  • Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 50 grams
  • Mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas) - 100 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium, diced
  • Tomato - 1 medium, diced
  • Green chilies - 1, slit
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Bisi Bele Bath powder (or Sambar powder) - 2 tablespoons
  • Ghee or oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 6 cups
  • Coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. Rinse the brown rice and toor dal together under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. In a large pot, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
  3. Add the diced onion and green chilies to the pot. Sauté until the onions become translucent.
  4. Stir in the diced tomato and cook until soft, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Add the mixed vegetables, turmeric powder, Bisi Bele Bath powder, and salt. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the rinsed rice and dal to the pot, followed by 6 cups of water. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  7. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until the rice and dal are cooked and have absorbed the flavors.
  8. Once cooked, remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes. Stir well before serving.
  9. Serve the Bisi Bele Bath Soup hot, garnished with chopped coriander leaves.
