Ingredients

  • Basmati rice - 1 cup
  • Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 1/2 cup
  • Mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas) - 1 cup
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Bisi Bele Bath powder - 2 tablespoons
  • Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
  • Coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Water - 4 cups

Steps

  1. Rinse the basmati rice and toor dal separately under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them together in water for 15-20 minutes.
  2. In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  3. Add the grated ginger, slit green chili, and curry leaves. Sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped tomato and cook until soft. Stir in turmeric powder and Bisi Bele Bath powder, mixing well.
  5. Add the mixed vegetables and sauté for 3-4 minutes until slightly tender.
  6. Drain the soaked rice and dal, then add them to the pot. Pour in 4 cups of water and add salt to taste. Stir everything well.
  7. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, until the rice and dal are cooked and the mixture is creamy.
  8. Once cooked, fluff the Bisi Bele Bath with a fork. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.
