Bisi Bele Bath

- Basmati rice - 1 cup
- Toor dal (split pigeon peas) - 1/2 cup
- Mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas) - 1 cup
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Green chili - 1, slit
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Bisi Bele Bath powder - 2 tablespoons
- Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
- Coriander leaves - for garnish
- Salt - to taste
- Oil - 2 tablespoons
- Water - 4 cups
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice and toor dal separately under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them together in water for 15-20 minutes.
- In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
- Add the grated ginger, slit green chili, and curry leaves. Sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato and cook until soft. Stir in turmeric powder and Bisi Bele Bath powder, mixing well.
- Add the mixed vegetables and sauté for 3-4 minutes until slightly tender.
- Drain the soaked rice and dal, then add them to the pot. Pour in 4 cups of water and add salt to taste. Stir everything well.
- Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes, until the rice and dal are cooked and the mixture is creamy.
- Once cooked, fluff the Bisi Bele Bath with a fork. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves before serving.
