Ingredients

  • Hilsa fish - 300 grams
  • Mustard seeds - 2 tablespoons
  • Poppy seeds - 1 tablespoon
  • Green chilies - 2
  • Turmeric powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Mustard oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Flattened rice (Chura) - 1 cup
  • Onion - 1 medium, thinly sliced
  • Coriander leaves - for garnish

Steps

  1. Soak the mustard seeds and poppy seeds in water for 30 minutes, then drain.
  2. In a blender, combine the soaked mustard seeds, poppy seeds, green chilies, turmeric powder, and salt to make a smooth paste.
  3. Marinate the Hilsa fish pieces in the mustard-poppy paste for 15 minutes.
  4. Heat mustard oil in a pan until smoking, then reduce the heat and add the marinated fish pieces carefully.
  5. Fry the fish for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are cooked through and golden brown.
  6. In another pan, lightly toast the flattened rice on low heat for 2-3 minutes until warm and crispy, then set aside.
  7. In the same pan, add sliced onions and sauté until they are translucent.
  8. Combine the toasted flattened rice with sautéed onions and mix well.
  9. Serve the crispy chura topped with the mustard fish and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
