Ingredients

  • Flattened rice (chura) - 1 cup
  • Split yellow lentils (moong dal) - 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Ginger - 1 tsp, grated
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard oil - 2 tbsp
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Water - 2 cups

Steps

  1. Rinse the split yellow lentils (moong dal) under running water until the water runs clear, then soak them in water for about 15 minutes.
  2. In a pan, heat the mustard oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onions and green chili to the pan, sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  4. Stir in the grated ginger and turmeric powder, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Drain the soaked lentils and add them to the pan, followed by 2 cups of water and salt. Bring it to a boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pan, cooking for about 10 minutes until the lentils are soft.
  7. Add the flattened rice (chura) to the pan, mixing well to combine with the lentils and spices. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Remove from heat, garnish with fresh coriander leaves, and serve hot.
