Ingredients

  • Flattened rice (Chura) - 100 grams
  • Black lentils (Urad dal) - 100 grams
  • Butter - 2 tablespoons
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, pureed
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 teaspoon
  • Cream - 2 tablespoons
  • Garam masala - 1 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Water - 4 cups

Steps

  1. Rinse the black lentils thoroughly and soak them in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked lentils and 4 cups of water. Cook for about 20-25 minutes until soft. Release the pressure and set aside.
  3. In a pan, heat the butter over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Then, add ginger-garlic paste and cook for another minute.
  5. Stir in the pureed tomato, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the mixture.
  6. Add the cooked lentils to the pan. Mix well and let it simmer for 10 minutes, adding water if needed for desired consistency.
  7. Stir in the cream and garam masala. Cook for another 5 minutes and adjust seasoning as necessary.
  8. In a separate bowl, soak the flattened rice in warm water for about 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  9. To serve, layer the chura on a plate and top it with dal makhani. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
