Ingredients

  • Flattened rice (chura) - 1 cup
  • Moong dal (split yellow lentils) - 1/2 cup
  • Water - 2 cups
  • Ghee (clarified butter) - 2 tablespoons
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Green chili - 1, slit
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Asafoetida (hing) - a pinch

Steps

  1. Rinse the moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for about 15 minutes.
  2. In a pot, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, allowing them to splutter.
  3. Add the grated ginger and slit green chili, sautéing for a minute until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the soaked and drained moong dal, turmeric powder, and salt. Sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add 2 cups of water to the pot and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the dal is soft.
  6. While the dal is cooking, rinse the flattened rice (chura) in cold water and let it sit for 5 minutes to soften.
  7. Once the dal is cooked, gently fold in the softened chura and mix well. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  8. Remove from heat, garnish with chopped coriander leaves, and serve hot.
