Ingredients

  • Flattened rice (chura) - 1 cup
  • Chana dal (split chickpeas) - 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Green chili - 1, finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Fresh coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon

Steps

  1. Rinse the chana dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 2 hours.
  2. Drain the soaked chana dal and boil it in fresh water for about 10-15 minutes until tender but not mushy. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  5. Stir in the grated ginger and green chili, and sauté for another minute.
  6. Add the boiled chana dal, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  7. In a large bowl, combine the flattened rice (chura) with the spiced chana dal mixture and toss gently until evenly mixed.
  8. Finish with fresh coriander leaves and drizzle with lemon juice before serving.
