Ingredients

  • Whole wheat flour - 100 grams
  • Besan (gram flour) - 50 grams
  • Coconut (grated, fresh) - 30 grams
  • Poppy seeds - 1 tablespoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
  • Water - as needed
  • Oil - 1 tablespoon (for dough) + 2 tablespoons (for frying)

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, besan, 1 tablespoon of oil, and salt. Mix well to form a crumbly texture.
  2. Gradually add water to form a smooth and stiff dough. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, mix together grated coconut, poppy seeds, cumin seeds, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and grated ginger to form the filling.
  4. Divide the dough into two equal parts. Roll out each part into a thin circle (about 6 inches in diameter).
  5. Spread the filling evenly over the rolled dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  6. Carefully roll the dough into a tight cylinder, sealing the edges with a little water.
  7. Cut the rolled dough into 1-inch pieces to form small rounds.
  8. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the bhakarwadi pieces until golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve warm as a snack with chutney or tea.
