Ingredients

  • Besan (gram flour) - 1 cup
  • Water - 3/4 cup
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon (or to taste)
  • Onion (finely chopped) - 1 small
  • Tomato (finely chopped) - 1 small
  • Green chili (finely chopped) - 1, optional
  • Coriander leaves (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
  • Oil (for cooking) - 2 tablespoons

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine besan, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin seeds, and salt.
  2. Gradually add water while whisking to create a smooth batter. The consistency should be similar to pancake batter.
  3. Stir in the chopped onion, tomato, green chili, and coriander leaves until well mixed.
  4. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add 1/2 tablespoon of oil.
  5. Once the oil is hot, pour a ladleful of the batter onto the skillet and spread it to form a circle.
  6. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the edges start to lift and the bottom is golden brown.
  7. Flip the cheela and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side, adding a little more oil if necessary.
  8. Repeat the process with the remaining batter, adding oil as needed.
  9. Serve hot with yogurt or chutney.
