- Besan (gram flour) - 1 cup
- Water - 3/4 cup
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon (or to taste)
- Onion (finely chopped) - 1 small
- Tomato (finely chopped) - 1 small
- Green chili (finely chopped) - 1, optional
- Coriander leaves (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
- Oil (for cooking) - 2 tablespoons
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, combine besan, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin seeds, and salt.
- Gradually add water while whisking to create a smooth batter. The consistency should be similar to pancake batter.
- Stir in the chopped onion, tomato, green chili, and coriander leaves until well mixed.
- Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add 1/2 tablespoon of oil.
- Once the oil is hot, pour a ladleful of the batter onto the skillet and spread it to form a circle.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the edges start to lift and the bottom is golden brown.
- Flip the cheela and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the other side, adding a little more oil if necessary.
- Repeat the process with the remaining batter, adding oil as needed.
- Serve hot with yogurt or chutney.
