Ingredients

  • Green gram (moong dal) - 1 cup
  • Rice - 1/4 cup
  • Ginger - 1 inch, grated
  • Green chili - 1, chopped
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Water - 1 1/2 cups (for batter)
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tablespoons, chopped
  • Oil - 2 tablespoons (for greasing and drizzling)
  • Carrot - 1 small, grated (optional)
  • Spinach - 1/2 cup, chopped (optional)

Steps

  1. Soak the green gram and rice in water for 4-6 hours or overnight.
  2. Drain the soaked mixture and blend with grated ginger, chopped green chili, cumin seeds, salt, and water until smooth.
  3. Transfer the batter to a bowl and mix in chopped onion, coriander leaves, and optional ingredients like grated carrot and chopped spinach.
  4. Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F) and grease a baking dish with oil.
  5. Pour the batter into the greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
  6. Drizzle a little oil on top and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and crispy.
  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing into squares.
  8. Serve hot with chutney or sambar.
