Ingredients

  • Moong dal (split yellow lentils) - 1 cup
  • Water - 1.5 cups (for soaking and blending)
  • Onion (finely chopped) - 1 small
  • Tomato (finely chopped) - 1 small
  • Green chili (finely chopped) - 1 (adjust to taste)
  • Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander leaves (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
  • Carrot (grated) - 1 small
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 1 tablespoon (for greasing and drizzling)
  • Baking powder - 1/2 teaspoon

Steps

  1. Rinse the moong dal under running water and soak it in water for at least 2 hours.
  2. After soaking, drain the water and blend the moong dal with 1.5 cups of fresh water until smooth and slightly thick.
  3. Transfer the blended dal to a mixing bowl and add chopped onion, tomato, green chili, grated ginger, coriander leaves, grated carrot, cumin powder, salt, and baking powder. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
  4. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and lightly grease a baking tray with oil.
  5. Pour a ladleful of the batter onto the baking tray and spread it out into a thin circle, about 5-6 inches in diameter.
  6. Repeat the process for the remaining batter, leaving space between each chilla on the tray.
  7. Drizzle a little oil on top of each chilla and bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden and crispy.
  8. Once done, remove from the oven and let cool slightly before cutting into wedges. Serve warm with chutney or yogurt.
