Ingredients

  • Yellow split moong dal - 1/4 cup
  • Water - 3 cups
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, diced
  • Carrot - 1 small, diced
  • Green peas - 1/4 cup (frozen or fresh)
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste
  • Black pepper - to taste
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Cilantro - for garnish

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Rinse the basmati rice and yellow split moong dal under cold water until the water runs clear, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a medium oven-safe pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, and sauté until they start to crackle.
  4. Add the chopped onion, ginger, and garlic to the pot and sauté until the onions are translucent.
  5. Stir in the diced tomato, carrot, and green peas. Cook for about 5 minutes until the vegetables soften.
  6. Add the rinsed rice and dal to the pot, followed by turmeric, garam masala, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine all ingredients.
  7. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, cover the pot with a lid and transfer it to the preheated oven.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the rice and dal are cooked through and the water has been absorbed.
  9. Remove from the oven, fluff with a fork, and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
