Ingredients
- Whole Wheat Flour - 1 cup
- Water - 1/4 cup (adjust as needed)
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Oil - 2 tablespoons (for dough)
- Yellow Moong Dal (split yellow lentils) - 1/2 cup
- Cumin Seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander Powder - 1 teaspoon
- Garam Masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red Chili Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Hing (Asafoetida) - a pinch
- Fresh Coriander Leaves - 2 tablespoons (chopped)
- Oil - 1 tablespoon (for filling)
- Black Pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
Steps
- In a mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, salt, and 2 tablespoons of oil. Gradually add water and knead into a smooth dough. Cover and let it rest for 20 minutes.
- Rinse the yellow moong dal and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the soaked moong dal, coriander powder, garam masala, red chili powder, hing, and black pepper. Stir well and cook for about 5-7 minutes until the dal is slightly softened. Remove from heat and mix in chopped coriander leaves. Allow the filling to cool.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each into a small ball. Roll out each ball into a small circle, about 10 cm in diameter.
- Place a spoonful of the moong dal filling in the center of each circle. Fold the edges over the filling to create a semi-circle and seal the edges by pressing them together.
- Arrange the kachoris on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Brush them lightly with oil.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown, flipping halfway through for even baking.
- Serve hot with your choice of chutney or sauce.
