Ingredients
- Bajra (pearl millet) - 1 cup
- Split yellow moong dal - 1/4 cup
- Water - 4 cups
- Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 small, chopped
- Ginger - 1 inch, grated
- Green chili - 1, finely chopped
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Asafoetida (hing) - a pinch
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander leaves - for garnish
- Oil - 1 tablespoon
Steps
- Rinse the bajra and moong dal under running water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for about 30 minutes, then drain.
- In a heavy-bottomed pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds; let them splutter.
- Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
- Stir in the grated ginger and chopped green chili, and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped tomato and turmeric powder, cooking until the tomato softens.
- Add the drained bajra and moong dal to the pot, followed by 4 cups of water and salt. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the bajra and dal are cooked through and the mixture has a porridge-like consistency.
- Once cooked, remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh coriander leaves.
