- Fish (like mackerel or tilapia) - 300 grams
- Tamarind paste - 2 tablespoons
- Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
- Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
- Green chilies - 2, slit
- Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
- Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
- Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
- Oil (preferably coconut or vegetable) - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 1 cup
Steps
- Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add curry leaves and chopped onions. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and slit green chilies. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the raw smell disappears.
- Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Add the tamarind paste and water, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, gently add the fish pieces and reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
