Ingredients

  • Fish (like mackerel or tilapia) - 300 grams
  • Tamarind paste - 2 tablespoons
  • Onion - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1 medium, chopped
  • Green chilies - 2, slit
  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves - 8-10 leaves
  • Fresh coriander leaves - for garnish
  • Oil (preferably coconut or vegetable) - 2 tablespoons
  • Salt - to taste
  • Water - 1 cup

Steps

  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add curry leaves and chopped onions. Sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  2. Add ginger-garlic paste and slit green chilies. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the raw smell disappears.
  3. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for another 2 minutes.
  5. Add the tamarind paste and water, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Once boiling, gently add the fish pieces and reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.
  7. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
