- Basmati rice - 1 cup
- Potatoes (peeled and diced) - 2 medium
- Onion (thinly sliced) - 1 medium
- Green peas (fresh or frozen) - 1/2 cup
- Ginger (grated) - 1 teaspoon
- Garlic (minced) - 1 teaspoon
- Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
- Garam masala - 1/2 teaspoon
- Green chili (slit) - 1
- Cilantro (chopped) - 2 tablespoons
- Vegetable oil or ghee - 2 tablespoons
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 2 cups
Steps
- Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then soak it in water for 15 minutes.
- In a pot, heat the vegetable oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Stir in the grated ginger, minced garlic, and green chili. Sauté for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the diced potatoes and green peas to the pot. Sprinkle in the turmeric powder and salt. Mix well and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pot. Stir gently to combine with the vegetables.
- Pour in 2 cups of water and add garam masala. Bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 15-18 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Once done, fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
