Ingredients

  • Granulated sugar - 200 grams
  • Water - 250 milliliters
  • Cornstarch - 50 grams
  • Powdered sugar - 50 grams
  • Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
  • Walnuts, chopped - 100 grams
  • Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • Food coloring (optional) - a few drops

Steps

  1. In a saucepan, combine the granulated sugar and water. Heat over medium heat until the sugar completely dissolves.
  2. Add the lemon juice and bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch with 100 milliliters of water until smooth. Gradually add this mixture to the boiling sugar syrup while stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  4. Continue to cook the mixture over low heat, stirring frequently, for about 30-40 minutes until it thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and food coloring, if desired. Fold in the chopped walnuts until evenly distributed.
  6. Pour the mixture into a greased square baking dish and smooth the top. Allow it to cool at room temperature for at least 4 hours, or until firm.
  7. Once set, dust the top with powdered sugar and cut into small squares. Serve and enjoy!
