- Ground beef or lamb - 200 grams
- Canned diced tomatoes - 200 grams
- Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
- Cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
- Oregano - 1 teaspoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Cooked rice - 200 grams (uncooked about 100 grams)
- Egg - 1 large
- Greek yogurt - 100 grams
- Nutmeg - a pinch
- Grated cheese (Kefalotyri or Parmesan) - 30 grams
Steps
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Stir in the ground beef or lamb, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes.
- Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, cinnamon, oregano, salt, and black pepper to the meat mixture. Simmer for 10 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- While the sauce simmers, prepare the béchamel by whisking together the egg, Greek yogurt, and nutmeg in a bowl until smooth.
- Once the meat sauce is ready, combine it with the cooked rice in a large bowl and mix well.
- Transfer the rice and meat mixture to a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Pour the béchamel mixture over the rice and meat, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle grated cheese on top.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
