Ingredients

  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Onion, finely chopped - 1 medium
  • Garlic, minced - 2 cloves
  • Ground beef or lamb - 200 grams
  • Canned diced tomatoes - 200 grams
  • Tomato paste - 2 tablespoons
  • Cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Oregano - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Cooked rice - 200 grams (uncooked about 100 grams)
  • Egg - 1 large
  • Greek yogurt - 100 grams
  • Nutmeg - a pinch
  • Grated cheese (Kefalotyri or Parmesan) - 30 grams

Steps

  1. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the ground beef or lamb, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes.
  4. Add diced tomatoes, tomato paste, cinnamon, oregano, salt, and black pepper to the meat mixture. Simmer for 10 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. While the sauce simmers, prepare the béchamel by whisking together the egg, Greek yogurt, and nutmeg in a bowl until smooth.
  6. Once the meat sauce is ready, combine it with the cooked rice in a large bowl and mix well.
  7. Transfer the rice and meat mixture to a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  8. Pour the béchamel mixture over the rice and meat, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle grated cheese on top.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
