Koulourakia are traditional Greek cookies, beautifully twisted and lightly sweetened, perfect for tea or coffee. This vegan version retains the classic flavors while being completely plant-based and delicious.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour - 200 grams
  • baking powder - 1 teaspoon
  • sugar - 50 grams
  • coconut oil (melted) - 50 grams
  • plant-based milk (almond or soy) - 60 ml
  • vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
  • orange zest - 1 teaspoon
  • sesame seeds - for sprinkling

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and baking powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar, melted coconut oil, plant-based milk, vanilla extract, and orange zest until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough into small pieces (about 30 grams each) and roll each piece into a long rope, then twist it into a spiral shape.
  6. Place the twisted cookies on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
  7. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top of each cookie.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly golden.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.
