Ingredients

  • Eggplant - 1 medium, sliced into 1/2 cm rounds
  • Ground beef or lamb - 250 grams
  • Onion - 1 small, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Tomato paste - 1 tablespoon
  • Dried oregano - 1 teaspoon
  • Cinnamon - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Feta cheese - 100 grams, crumbled
  • Heavy cream - 2 tablespoons
  • Egg - 1 large, beaten

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. Slice the eggplant into 1/2 cm rounds and sprinkle with salt. Let sit for 15 minutes to draw out moisture, then rinse and pat dry.
  3. In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until softened.
  4. Add the ground meat to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Stir in the tomato paste, oregano, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until well combined. Remove from heat.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine the crumbled feta cheese, heavy cream, and beaten egg. Mix until smooth.
  7. In a baking dish, layer half of the eggplant rounds at the bottom. Spread half of the meat mixture over the eggplant, then add another layer of eggplant.
  8. Top with the remaining meat mixture and finally pour the feta mixture over the top evenly.
  9. Drizzle the remaining tablespoon of olive oil over the dish.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing into bite-sized pieces.
