- All-purpose flour - 120 grams
- Unsalted butter - 100 grams
- Water - 120 ml
- Eggs - 2 large
- Granulated sugar - 50 grams
- Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
- Milk - 250 ml
- Cornstarch - 30 grams
- Salt - 1/4 teaspoon
- Powdered sugar - for dusting
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F).
- In a saucepan, combine the water and butter over medium heat, stirring until the butter melts.
- Remove from heat and add the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
- Return to low heat, stirring constantly until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan, about 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let it cool slightly, then incorporate the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until smooth.
- Divide the dough in half and spread each half onto a parchment-lined baking tray into a rectangle, roughly 1 cm thick.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and puffed. Let cool completely.
- In another saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla extract over medium heat until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the custard from heat and let it cool slightly before spreading it between the two layers of baked pastry.
- Top with the second layer of pastry and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
