Ingredients
- apples - 4 medium (about 600g)
- vegan butter - 50g
- brown sugar - 75g
- all-purpose flour - 150g
- cold water - 3 tablespoons
- lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
- cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
- salt - 1/4 teaspoon
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into quarters. Toss them in a bowl with lemon juice and cinnamon, then set aside.
- In a 20 cm (8 inch) oven-safe skillet, melt the vegan butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved and bubbly, creating a caramel sauce.
- Arrange the apple quarters in the skillet, packing them tightly in a circular pattern. Cook for about 10 minutes until the apples are slightly softened and the caramel thickens.
- While the apples are cooking, prepare the pastry. In a bowl, mix the flour and salt. Cut in the vegan butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water until a dough forms. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 10 minutes.
- Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to fit the skillet. Place it over the apples, tucking the edges down around the apples to create a crust.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before inverting onto a serving plate. Serve warm.
