Ingredients
- Onions - 350 grams, thinly sliced
- Olive oil - 2 tablespoons
- Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon
- Balsamic vinegar - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
- Puff pastry - 1 sheet (about 250 grams)
- Fresh thyme - 2 sprigs
Steps
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 10 minutes until they start to soften.
- Stir in the brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.
- Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the fresh thyme leaves. Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the bottom of a round oven-safe dish (about 20 cm in diameter).
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut it into a circle slightly larger than the dish. Place the pastry over the onions, tucking the edges down around the sides.
- Make a few small slits in the pastry to allow steam to escape. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes before carefully inverting onto a serving plate. Serve warm.
