Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour - 250 grams
  • milk - 150 ml
  • active dry yeast - 7 grams
  • sugar - 30 grams
  • salt - 5 grams
  • unsalted butter (melted) - 30 grams
  • egg - 1 large (for egg wash)
  • water - 50 ml

Steps

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the melted butter and the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually mix in the flour with your hands or a wooden spoon until a dough starts to form. Add water if the dough is too dry.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
  7. After the dough has risen, punch it down and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan.
  8. Cover the loaf pan and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  9. Beat the egg and brush it over the top of the loaf for a golden finish.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
  11. Let the bread cool for a few minutes before removing it from the pan. Serve warm with butter, jam, or your favorite spread.
