Ingredients

  • Zucchini - 400 grams
  • Onion - 1 medium (about 150 grams)
  • Garlic - 2 cloves
  • Heavy cream - 120 ml
  • Grated Gruyère cheese - 100 grams
  • Parmesan cheese - 30 grams
  • Olive oil - 1 tablespoon
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Nutmeg - a pinch
  • Fresh thyme - 1 teaspoon (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Wash and thinly slice the zucchini into rounds.
  3. Finely chop the onion and garlic.
  4. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, sautéing until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the sliced zucchini to the skillet, cooking for another 5-7 minutes until slightly softened. Season with salt, black pepper, and nutmeg.
  6. In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, half of the Gruyère cheese, and thyme. Stir well to combine.
  7. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the zucchini mixture, then pour half of the cream mixture over it.
  8. Repeat the layers with the remaining zucchini and cream mixture.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese and the grated Parmesan on top.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  11. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
