Ingredients

  • Potatoes (Yukon Gold) - 400 grams
  • Heavy cream - 200 ml
  • Whole milk - 100 ml
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Gruyère cheese - 100 grams, grated
  • Butter - 30 grams, for greasing
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Nutmeg - a pinch

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 160°C (320°F).
  2. Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly (about 2-3 mm thick) using a mandoline or sharp knife.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg.
  4. Grease a baking dish with butter. Layer half of the potato slices evenly at the bottom of the dish.
  5. Pour half of the cream mixture over the first layer of potatoes, then sprinkle half of the grated Gruyère cheese on top.
  6. Add the remaining potato slices in another even layer, followed by the rest of the cream mixture.
  7. Top with the remaining Gruyère cheese to create a nice crust.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
