Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 250 grams
  • Baking powder - 5 grams
  • Baking soda - 2 grams
  • Salt - 5 grams
  • Water - 150 milliliters
  • Vegetable oil - for frying

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Gradually add water to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes at room temperature.
  5. After resting, divide the dough into two equal pieces and shape each piece into a long, thin rectangle about 1 cm thick.
  6. Stack the two rectangles on top of each other and press gently to adhere.
  7. Cut the stacked dough into strips about 3 cm wide, then gently stretch each strip to about 30 cm in length.
  8. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat until hot (around 180°C).
  9. Carefully add the stretched dough strips to the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding, until they puff up and turn golden brown, around 2-3 minutes per side.
  10. Remove the youtiao from the oil and drain on a paper towel before serving.
