Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour - 200 grams
  • Water - 100 ml
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Ground halal beef or lamb - 150 grams
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Spring onions - 2, finely chopped
  • Soy sauce - 1 tablespoon
  • Five-spice powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Black pepper - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Egg - 1, beaten (for egg wash)

Steps

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt, then gradually add water while mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth, then cover and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Sauté the garlic and ginger until fragrant, then add the ground meat. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  3. Stir in the spring onions, soy sauce, five-spice powder, and black pepper. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until everything is well combined. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.
  4. Divide the rested dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a thin circle on a lightly floured surface.
  5. Place a spoonful of the meat filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape, sealing the edges by pressing with your fingers or a fork.
  6. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Place the filled pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
