Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 400 grams
  • Sichuan peppercorns - 1 tablespoon
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Maple syrup - 1 tablespoon
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, grated
  • Cornstarch - 2 tablespoons
  • Vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Scallions - 2, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the Sichuan peppercorns for about 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat and crush them slightly using a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and crushed Sichuan peppercorns to create the marinade.
  4. Add the tofu cubes to the marinade and let them soak for at least 10 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure even coverage.
  5. While the tofu marinates, preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat.
  6. After marinating, remove the tofu from the marinade and toss it gently with cornstarch until evenly coated.
  7. Add vegetable oil to the grill or grill pan, then place the tofu cubes in a single layer. Grill for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.
  8. Once grilled, remove the tofu from the heat and garnish with chopped scallions and sesame seeds before serving.
