- Dark soy sauce - 30 ml
- Rice wine - 30 ml
- Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon (15 grams)
- Vegetable broth - 200 ml
- Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
- Star anise - 1 piece
- Cinnamon stick - 1 piece
- Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped
- Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
- Red chili flakes - 1/2 teaspoon
Steps
- Press the tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess water, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
- In a medium bowl, combine soy sauce, dark soy sauce, rice wine, brown sugar, and vegetable broth to create the braising sauce.
- Heat sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and ginger, and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Add the tofu cubes to the skillet, and fry until golden brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
- Pour the braising sauce over the tofu, and add star anise, cinnamon stick, and red chili flakes.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cover. Let it braise for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Once done, remove the lid and allow the sauce to reduce for an additional 5 minutes, until slightly thickened.
- Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions.
