Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Soy sauce - 60 ml
  • Dark soy sauce - 30 ml
  • Rice wine - 30 ml
  • Brown sugar - 1 tablespoon (15 grams)
  • Vegetable broth - 200 ml
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
  • Star anise - 1 piece
  • Cinnamon stick - 1 piece
  • Green onions - 2 stalks, chopped
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Red chili flakes - 1/2 teaspoon

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess water, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine soy sauce, dark soy sauce, rice wine, brown sugar, and vegetable broth to create the braising sauce.
  3. Heat sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and ginger, and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  4. Add the tofu cubes to the skillet, and fry until golden brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
  5. Pour the braising sauce over the tofu, and add star anise, cinnamon stick, and red chili flakes.
  6. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cover. Let it braise for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Once done, remove the lid and allow the sauce to reduce for an additional 5 minutes, until slightly thickened.
  8. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions.
