Ingredients

  • Seitan - 200 grams
  • Soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • Hoisin sauce - 3 tablespoons
  • Maple syrup - 1 tablespoon
  • Five-spice powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 teaspoon, minced
  • Cornstarch - 1 tablespoon
  • Water - 50 ml
  • Cucumber - 1 small, julienned
  • Green onions - 2, sliced
  • Chinese pancakes or tortillas - 4

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. In a bowl, mix soy sauce, hoisin sauce, maple syrup, five-spice powder, rice vinegar, garlic, and ginger to create the marinade.
  3. Slice the seitan into thin, duck-like pieces and marinate them in the mixture for at least 15 minutes.
  4. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the marinated seitan, cooking until slightly crispy on each side (about 5-7 minutes).
  5. Remove the seitan from the skillet and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Mix cornstarch with 50 ml of water to create a slurry, then brush the mixture onto the seitan pieces to help them crisp up in the oven.
  7. Bake the seitan in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until crispy and golden, flipping halfway through.
  8. While the seitan is baking, prepare the Chinese pancakes or tortillas according to the package instructions.
  9. To serve, place the crispy seitan on pancakes, topped with julienned cucumber and sliced green onions, then drizzle with extra hoisin sauce if desired.
