Ingredients

  • Firm tofu - 300 grams
  • Cornstarch - 3 tablespoons
  • Vegetable oil - 4 tablespoons (for frying)
  • Garlic - 2 cloves, minced
  • Ginger - 1 tablespoon, minced
  • Green onion - 2 stalks, chopped
  • Soy sauce - 4 tablespoons
  • Rice vinegar - 1 tablespoon
  • Maple syrup - 2 tablespoons
  • Sriracha - 1 tablespoon
  • Sesame oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Vegetable broth - 60 ml
  • Sesame seeds - 1 tablespoon (for garnish)

Steps

  1. Press the tofu for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut it into bite-sized cubes.
  2. In a bowl, coat the tofu cubes with cornstarch evenly; this will help achieve a crispy texture when fried.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes in a single layer and fry until golden brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and sauté the minced garlic and ginger for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped green onions and stir-fry for another minute.
  6. In a bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, sriracha, sesame oil, and vegetable broth. Pour this sauce into the skillet with the garlic, ginger, and green onions.
  7. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 3-5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Add the crispy tofu back into the skillet, tossing it gently in the sauce to coat evenly. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  9. Serve the Vegan General Tso's Chicken hot, garnished with sesame seeds and extra green onions if desired.
