Vegan Char Siu Burger

- Soy protein (or tempeh) - 200g
- Soy sauce - 2 tbsp
- Hoisin sauce - 2 tbsp
- Maple syrup - 1 tbsp
- Rice vinegar - 1 tbsp
- Five-spice powder - 1 tsp
- Garlic powder - 1 tsp
- Ginger powder - 1 tsp
- Sesame oil - 1 tsp
- Vegetable oil - 1 tbsp
- Burger buns - 2
- Cucumber - 50g, thinly sliced
- Green onions - 2, chopped
- Fresh cilantro - a handful, chopped
- Vegan mayo - 2 tbsp
- Sriracha - 1 tsp (optional)
Steps
- In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, five-spice powder, garlic powder, ginger powder, and sesame oil to create the marinade.
- Cut the soy protein or tempeh into burger-sized pieces and marinate it in the sauce for at least 15 minutes.
- Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat and cook the marinated soy protein or tempeh for about 5-7 minutes on each side until nicely browned.
- While the protein is cooking, prepare the burger buns by toasting them lightly in another pan or toaster.
- Spread vegan mayo on the bottom half of each bun and add the cooked soy protein or tempeh.
- Top with sliced cucumber, chopped green onions, and fresh cilantro.
- If desired, drizzle with sriracha for a spicy kick.
- Place the top half of the bun on and serve immediately.
